The Waves Of Change

Chapter Three Through Four

Chapter Three

It was 0900 hours and Chakotay had spent the last hour on the bridge reminising over the enjoyable time he and Seven had the night before. He felt there was a lot of possibilities for a relationship with Seven. He smiled over the fact that she seemed happy when she left his quarters. It was obvious that she had enjoyed their dinner date as much as he had.

Beside him in the captain's chair was Janeway, still feeling hurt and jealous over the current events of her relationship with Chakotay. At least, what was a relationship.

"Oh, who are you kidding, Janeway." She thought to herself. "You pushed him into the arms of another woman. If only you had responded positively to his desire to have a real relationship with you."

Her feelings of self-critism turned back to jealousy and anger. "How dare he get involve with someone else! How dare she accept his offer of dinner! Before long, I bet he'll bag her and actually enjoy it. Hell, they'll probably both enjoy it and what do I get? A ship that gives me no sexual satifaction!"

The two of them past the remaining hours until lunch in their own little worlds, not saying a word. They were not concerned of any activities going on around them as the ship travelled through space without any problems.

Meanwhile, Seven was in Engineering tired from lack of sleep, but wearing a smile even so. She had been having reoccuring nightmeres of being a Borg drone, but last night was different. She had an unseen rescuer in her dream. She never saw his face, but she had been saved from being Borg.

She knew in reality it was not one person who rescued her from living a life of a Borg, but some how it was nice to have a dream with a hero in it. She had no idea why she had the dream, but she was glad she did.

Then her thoughts turned to Chakotay and how happy she was to be with him the night before. Then there was the kiss. The kiss that took her breath away.

Her smile grew even larger and before long she was also in her own little world and was anxious to have lunch with Chakotay. She wondered if lunch would go just as nicely as the night before.

The hours finally past and it was now time for lunch for Janeway, Chakotay, and Seven. Chakotay and Seven met at the door of the mess hall.

Chakotay greeted her with a kiss, which made Seven smile. They stared in each others eyes, for moment, with deep infatuation. Once they released their visual grip on each other, they entered the mess hall.

Neelix greeted them with a smile. "Ah, nice to see you Chakotay and Seven. Our specialty today is Chicken Coer Don Bleu."

"Sounds good, Neelix." Chakotay replied. "I just hope your attempt at this Earth dish doesn't cause the crew another intestenal upset."

"Oh, I assure you, you will enjoy this dish with no side effects."

Chakotay looked at Seven. "Are you game to try it?"

"I am generally willing to try anything new."

To Seven all food was new, because as a Borg she had no need to take in sustanance. Now, the Universe was an array of new experiences, especially in the area of cuisine.

"Make two Coer Don Bleus." Chakotay ordered.

"Coming right up!" Neelix said with joy.

"Shall we find a table to sit down?"

Seven smiled and nodded. She was so caught up in his handsome features. She admired his dark complexion and eyes. Everything about him was so handsome that she could not get enough of him.

Chakotay guided her to a table and they conversed about their morning as they waited for their food. Then Chakotay noticed a brief moment of exhaustion from her and was concerned.

"Are you alright?"

Seven shook her head. "I'm fine. It's just been a long morning."

He studied her for a moment. Then said, "Some how I get the feeling it's more than that."

Neelix sat their meals on the table before them. He started to say something, but then had the feeling he maybe interrupting something. Seven looked so serious. The feeling of being an intruder increased, so he departed without saying a word.

Seven looked at Chakotay briefly then looked away. "I'm having dreams which cause me not to sleep well. Last night, though, the dreams weren't as bad as they usually are."

"You know, I have a cure for bad dreams and trouble sleeping."

"Really?"

"Yes, come by my quarters tonight. We can have dinner again and I can tell you all about my cure."

Seven studied him with a smile on her face. "I can't wait."

Unbeknowest to them they were being watched from afar from another table. Janeway watched the two inact with each other until Neelix interrupted her thoughts.

"Captain, would you like to have our specialty of the day?"

She looked up at Neelix. "I'll give it a whirl. I just hope I don't end up with another stomach ache."

"No one is going to let me live down my Five Alarm Chili, are they?"

"No, but you can make up for it if your other Earth dishes don't cause tummy aches." She said with a smile.

Neelix shooked his head. "I'll get you the special." Then he turned and walked away, mumbling, "You make one dish that's too spicy and people get an upset stomach. They never seem to let you live it down."

Janeway went back to observing Seven and Chakotay. Then the crushing blow hit her in the face as though someone had slapped her. She saw the two kiss romantically at their table.

Uncontrolled tears started to roll down her face. She got up from her table and ran out of the mess hall. Neelix was about to sit her food down on her table as she ran out of the room.

"Captain, do you want me to make this to go?"

She gave him no response, as though she had not heard him, as she ran through the doors. She ran past fellow crew members who noticed she was upset, but she refused to stop and talk to any of them.

By the time she reached her quarters, she felt she was about to get sick to her stomach. She bent over while holding her stomach to keep from wretching in the corridor. She stumbled into her quarters and sat against the bulkhead waiting for her stomach to calm down.

"Funny." She thought to herself. "I haven't eaten a bite of Neelix's food and I feel I'm going to be sick."

She sat there trying to let the wave of nausea pass. As she sat, she remembered the medicine bag Chakotay gave her.

Once the wave past she crawled over to the built in drawers and openned one of them. Then she rummaged through the drawer and found the medicine bag.

She clutched it to her chest. Her face looked as though she felt doom and despair. As she clutched the medicine bag to her chest the tears started to flow freely again.

She tried to calm her mind and feelings, but could not. Finally, she tapped her combadge at 1300 hours.

She tried hard to keep the tears back as she tapped her combadge. She looked up towards the ceiling as though the gravity on the ship would keep the flow of tears from pouring out of her eyes. Her pain was so strong that she felt it would never go away.

Once she had her tears under control she tapped her combadge. "Janeway to Bridge."

"Bridge here." Came Tuvok's.

"I'm taking the rest of the day off."

Tuvok became shocked at what she had said, but did not reveal his emotion. "Is everything alright, Captain?"

"Everything is fine. I just need a day off, that's all."

"Aye, Captain." Tuvok replied, but he felt there was more than what she was saying.

Janeway was still clutching the medicine bag to her chest. She let the tears flow freely now and hoped that Tuvok did not come to check on her again, like he had the night before.

"How could Chakotay do this to me." She thought to herself as the tears rolled down her face. "How can he love a woman who was once a Borg Drone and now has to learn to be human again? She knew I had feelings for him, but she just had to take him away. Why? She may have the perfect body, but that's only because she was a Borg Drone. They strived in perfection. Everything has to be perfect for Borg. There could be no improfections. She can't love him like I can. Like I want to love him. If she did, she probably shut down again."

That last thought gave her an idea. It had finally occurred to her what she was going to do about this situation and she smiled. Now all she needed was some time alone with Seven and she knew just when and where to deal with that.

The afternoon past even slower than the morning had. Nothing exciting had occurred all day for the crew of Voyager, so the ship past through space without any delays.

Chakotay sat in the command chair, in place of Janeway. He had been wondering all afternoon why she had not returned to duty. Finally, he decided that it might not hurt to check up on her after his dinner date with Seven.

The hours continued to pass and his thoughts drifted back to Seven. He felt he was falling madly in love with her. She was a special woman, at least to him. He could not find any flaw in her what so ever. Not even her in her social graces, which she really had not had much experience with until she came aboard Voyager. Even so, she was perfect in his eyes.

His shift had finally ended and he was relieved of duty. He headed immediately to his quarters to prepare for Seven's arrival.

He ordered the replicator to give him some leather, which he specified the texture and type. Then he proceeded to do the same with some soft wood, beads, four feathers, and soft silk like string.

As he worked he thought of the previous times with Seven. He was hoping their evenings together would become a regular thing for he enjoyed the time he spent with her. He loved everything about her and could not take his mind off of her.

He finished assembling the gift he had promised her earlier as the chime to his quarters rang.

"Come in." He was surprised to see it was Seven. "You're early!"

"Yes, if it's not agreeable with you that I am early, I will leave and return later."

"No! No! It's quite alright."

"What do you have behind your back?" She asked.

"Oh, um. It's one of the things I promised you to help you sleep better. It's a.."

"Dream Catch!" She exclaimed.

"Oh, so you know about these things?"

"Yes. The web catches dreams and saves the good ones for another night. While the bad dreams evaporate the following morning, never to return again."

"Yes." Chakotay smiled. "I'm glad you know about some of the Native culture."

"Yes, I have learned a little since, um. Well, I've learned a little about the Native ways."

Chakotay smiled knowing the hologram of him must have taught her a thing or two about Native Americans. "Well, this Dream Catcher is yours to help you get rid of the bad dreams."

She took the dream catcher from him and admired it. It was more authentic looking than the holographic Chakotay had given her. It was made with a real looking soft plyable wood, which had been manipulated to make both ends meet and wrapped with what seemed like real buffalo skin. It was not the perfect circular shape that the holographic Chakotay gave her, but looked more like a rain drop. The webbing was slightly different also. She ran her hand acrossed the webbing and felt it's silky smoothness. It all seemed more authentic than the other one, but she knew Chakotay had to have replicated it.

The beads that dangled by leather strips from the dream catcher seemed like they were made of real bone. He had placed two on each side and coloured them red and blue.

The feathers, she noticed, looked that of an Eagle's feathers. The design and colour on them was magnificent.

"You replicated this?" She asked.

"Well, actually I replicated the pieces of the dream catcher and put it all together."

"It's magnificent work!" She exclaimed with awe.

"I put my heart into it, for the one I love." He said softly.

She looked at him and smile. Then she wrapped her arms around him and gave him a passionate kiss. He returned her kiss with just as much passion.

Suddenly, Seven pulled away from him and placed a hand on her face. "You alright?" Chakotay asked.

"Yes, I'm fine." Seven replied. "Just a little dizzy. I just need to sit down."

She tried to make her way to the couch that was in the room, but was a bit unsteady. Chakotay came up behind her to put his arm around her and guide her to the nearest seat.

"Shall I call the doctor?" Chakotay asked her as he assisted her into the chair.

"No, really, I'll be fine." She insisted holding her head with both hands now. "I just need to sit here for a few minutes."

Chakotay sat with her in silence for a few minutes, until she appeared to be feeling better again. "You know, a little chamomile tea at night before you go to the alcove to regenerate, may help you feel more refreshed in the morning and take away some of the dizziness."

"I'll try that." She said werily. Then as an after thought, "Maybe I should go now. It's been a long day."

"But you haven't had dinner yet."

She wanted to stay so badly, but she did not want to pass out on the real Chakotay. She knew exactly what was wrong with her when they had kissed and she did not want it to happen again. Her emotions were so ambiguous to her at the moment. She wanted to stay so badly, just as much as she did not want her feelings to cause another shut down.

"I'm sorry, Chakotay, but I can't stay."

Chakotay noticed she was about to cry. Her lower lip trimbled as she tried hard to hold the tears back.

Suddenly, she reached up and touched his cheek. "I do love you, Chakotay." Then she turned and walked out of his quarters.

He stood there stunned at what had just occurred as he watched the doors close. He was not sure what had just happened, but he was certain he heard the words.

Safe in the confines of her adapted so called accomodations she cried. She felt so dizzy and realized she could not love Chakotay as she wanted to without the doctor removing what was preventing her to feel such strong emotions. She had to do something if she wanted to continue a relationship with the man she adored.

As she cried, she looked at the dream catcher. She knew his feelings for her were the same and she began to seriously think about talking to the doctor in the morning.

Suddenly she heard the doors open and close. She quickly wiped the tears off her face and composed herself.

"Captain."

"Seven." Janeway greeted. "Nice Dream Catcher."

Seven acknowledge her statement with a nod, then asked, "What brings you here?"

"I wanted to talk to you about Chakotay."

"Yes?"

"Don't do this to him. You can't possibly give him what he needs."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because you are Borg."

"I was Borg." Seven said indignantly.

"Still you have Borg technology running through your body and you remember what happened when you reproduced a look alike on the holodeck."

"It can be fixed."

"Can it?"

"The doctor said he could attempt it when I was ready."

"You can't really say you want to risk removing Borg technology from your brain." Janeway was playing her plan out just the way she wanted to and felt it was working.

Seven stood there with uncertainty on her face.

"I didn't think so." Janeway answered. "If you really care about Chakotay, you'll end this now."

"Maybe your right."

Janeway almost smiled, but refained. She knew for certain now, that she was getting to Seven.

"I'd put a stop to this, before Chakotay finds out you can't be the perfect woman he thinks you are. If you don't, one of you could get hurt."

Seven face pained with what Janeway was saying. Seeing that she had succeed with her goal, Janeway turned and left.

Seven was now alone with her thoughts. Torn and unsure of herself now, her tears returned harder than before. The dizziness became worse and she dropped the dream catcher to the floor.

Janeway upset her even more and her feelings were tearing her apart. Her head pounded and the room spun so fast that she did not have time to notice that she herself was also dropping to the deck.

An unheard thud sounded as she hit the deck and her thoughts ceased. She laid unconscious on the floor. The Dream Catcher laid beside her.

Chakotay had an uneasy feeling. He felt the spirits were trying to tell him something. So, he set out to listen to what they had to say.

He meditated for a few minutes and heard the spirits urgent plea for him to go to her. They gave no reason why, except there was a great need for him to be with her at this moment. Something was wrong, Chakotay felt, and the spirits were not saying.

His mind returned to his surroundings and he quickly rose to go to Seven. He entered the storage bay where she regenorated and saw her lying unconscious.

Immediately he tapped his communicator. "Chakotay to Sickbay."

*Sickbay here.* Came the doctor's voice.

"Medical emergency in Seven's quarters."

*I'm on my way.*

It did not take long for the doctor to transport himself to where Seven stayed. He immediately access the situation and realized that a repeat of what had happened a few months ago on the holodeck had occurred.

"What happened?"

"I don't know." Chakotay replied. "She left my quarters feeling dizzy. I felt the need to check up on her and I found her just like this."

"What happened before she left your quarters?"

"Well, um." Chakotay paused. "Nothing that I know of that would have caused this. She didn't fall and hit her head. We hadn't even had anything to drink, much less eat."

The doctor took a deep breath. "Did you have an arguement or anything that may have upset her?"

"No, she seemed happied, until." Chakotay paused. "I gave her the dream catcher and she seemed very happy about it. Then she kissed me and it became, um, passionate."

"I see." The doctor stated. "An over stimulation again."

"What?"

"I'm sworn to secrecy. There's only one other person who knows anything about this and I can't tell anyone else."

"I understand, I think." Chakotay said. Then he wondered if something else happened that he did not know about.

"We need to get her to Sickbay."

Chakotay assisted the doctor in getting Seven to Sickbay. Once there, the doctor started to examine her. "Just as I thought." He sighed.

"Is it serious?"

"Depends on what you consider serious." The doctor evaded.

"You're not answering my question, Doctor. Will she be alright?"

"Yes, given her some time."

"May I stay here until she wakes up?"

"It's up to you, but I recommend you get some rest."

"Understood, but since you have no objection, I'll stay her and wait for her to wake up."

"Suit yourself, but that maybe a while."

"Thank you, Doctor."

It was now 2100 hours and Chakotay sat on the biobed across from her and waited. Two hours past and sleep final over took him. The doctor noticed him sleeping on the biobed next to Seven, but did not disturb him. Instead, he allowed Chakotay to remain in Sickbay for the night.

Chapter Four

Chakotay sat with Seven in Sickbay, waiting for her to return to consciousness. He noticed around her neck was the medicine bag he had given her a couple days ago and smiled.

He began to pray to the Great Spirit that she would awaken soon. As he prayed she stirred. Happiness was returning to his features. The worry he felt was starting to be relieved and when she opened her eyes and looked at him, he said under his breath, "Ajo, Wanka Tanka."

"You're here." She said softly.

"Where else should I be?"

"Either asleep in your quarters or on the Bridge. How long have I been out?"

"About four hours." He replied. "I was getting worried about you."

"You really shouldn't be." She said. "She is right. We can't continue."

"Who said that?" He asked with alarm.

"The captain."

"The captain saw you?" Chakotay asked. Anger was starting to rise within him as she nodded. "When?"

"Just before I, um."

He understood, nodded, and felt his blood begin boil. "I'll be right back. There's someone I have to see."

He kissed her and started to leave when she called to him. "Chakotay?"

He turned back to her and she continued. "What were you saying when I awoke?"

"Oh, I was thanking the Great Spirit for your awaking." He answered. "Wanka Tanka means Great Spirit."

"I see. And the other word?"

"Ajo, can be a greeting, a thank you, or as some humans say, amen. It has more than one meaning."

"Nice language."

"I think so." He said with a smile and kissed her cheek before he left Sickbay.

As he walked down the corridor he was begining to fume about Katherine's jealousy. He entered her Ready Room without ringing the chime.

"How dare you! I told you to stay out of the crews' personal lives and I made it quite clear you were to stay out of mine!"

Janeway stood from his verbal attack on her. "How dare you just barge into my Ready Room!" She said in return to his anger.

"What I do on my personal time is my business and if you interfer, you can expect me to be on a path straight to your Ready Room or quarters, whether you like it or not! You had no right to interfer with my relationship with Seven!"

"She's Borg! You can't have a relationship with her!" Katherine shouted.

"Was Borg!" He shouted back.

She smiled and sat back down in her chair as though she were a cheshire cat. "OK, then why does she still have Borg technology in her brain? Technology that makes her shut down at the very first experience of strong emotions."

"Oh, so you caused her and emotional upset to prove a point?"

"Possibly."

"Katherine, don't try to cover up with me. I know you too well."

She was getting upset again. "If you know me so well, then why did you just shove me aside when you knew I wanted you and started seeing someone else! I felt I had every right to be upset and talk with her since you wouldn't listen!"

He leaned on her desk and got face to face with her. "Oh, come on, Katherine! You're in love with this ship and not me! I'm just someone to have around in your spare time!"

She was mortified and stunned. "That's not true!"

"Isn't it?"

She stared at him not knowing what to say.

"It's over, Katherine. It was over a long time ago. Now stay out of my relationship with Seven and don't talk to her about our relationship again! Seven's and mine that is!"

He walked out of her office, leaving her staring at the door. Her mouth had drop, but no words came out. She could not believe Chakotay could end their relationship just like that. She wanted him back terribly, but now she knew she had completely ruined any chance of that.

She suddenly felt empty inside. She did not have a clue what she was going to do without him. She loved him and had blown any chance now of ever having him back.

She sat in her Ready Room for the rest of the shift. Telling Tuvok she was not to be disturbed unless it was an emergency. Depression overwhelmed her far greater than ever before.

Chakotay returned to Sickbay and he over head the doctor talking to Seven.

"Well, you know your options. All you have to do, is say the word and I'll do the surgery."

"What surgery?" Chakotay asked.

Seven sighed. "I have a Borg device in my brain still, that causes me to shut done when I experience strong over whelming emotions."

"So, the captain was not lying about that?"

"If that's what she told you, no she was not." Seven confirmed.

"So, are you going through with the surgery?" Chakotay asked.

"I haven't decided."

"There are some risks, but afterwards, she will be able to have a full emotional life." The Doctor informed.

"I see. Doctor, can I have a moment alone with Seven?"

"Certainly." The doctor turned and went to his other duties.

"Seven, I love you and I want what is best for you, but you have to want this. Don't do it for me. Do it for yourself. Whatever you decide is fine with me."

"I'm not sure what I want. I have very strong feelings for you." A tear trickled down her face as she laid on the bio-bed. "I do love you, Chakotay. I just don't know what I want right now."

He could see she was struggling with her emotions. Trying to keep them supressed, but yet she wanted to communicate her feelings to him.

"I'm not feeling well again." She said.

"It's OK." He kissed her forehead. "You get some rest and I'll be back to check on you later."

She closed her eyes as he left to talk with the doctor, before he left Sickbay.

"Doctor?"

He was standing at a computer going over lab reports. "Yes, Chakotay?"

"I was wondering, how risky is this surgery?"

"Well, given the location of the Borg implant, I'd say there is a slim chance she may not make it." He noticed Chakotay's face and brighten his tone of voice. "Which leaves a good chance she will make it with no problems what so ever."

"If she makes it could she have any brain damage?"

The doctor sighed and looked directly at Chakotay. "I'm not going to lie to you. This is brain surgery. I can't say there won't be any ill affects nor can I say there will be. I can say, that if she agrees to the surgery, I will do everything in my power not to let anything bad happen to her."

"Thank you, Doctor." Chakotay said reaching out and touching the side of the doctor's arm with his hand. "If you need me or if there's any problems don't hesitate to call me. I'll be in my quarters trying to catch a few z's before my shift."

"I'll do that."

Chakotay headed for his quarters, but once there, he decided he needed some spiritual guidance from his spirit guide. He set everything up to start his meditation. He lit some sage to slowly smolder as he meditated and then sat down cross legged on the floor holding his medicine bag.

"Akoo Chee moi ya." He said in his native tongue and began praying for guidance.

He went into a trance and the spirits guided him on his journey. He had so much confussion and had to figure out where he was suppose to be at this point in his life. Had he made the right choice or was he on the wrong path? His heart was torn and his mind confused. He had no clue and he knew only the spirits could guide him.

He was shown one future and then another. One ended in tragedy and heart break. The other, happiness and joy. The only thing he could not see was who he was sharing his happiness and joy with or where the tragedy and heart break laid.

Suddenly, in a cloud of mist, his father appeared to him. "Ajo, my son."

"Ajo, Father."

"Your heart troubles you. You fear for one you love, but yet there is one you have not completely let yourself free of. You battle with her and are in a struggle of wills with her."

"You are correct, Father." He replied solemnly. "I still care for one, but yet my heart is in love with another."

"Your path now forks. You must make a choice. One I can not make for you."

"I understand, but I still ask for your guidance."

"Your path to love and happiness lies with your one true love. You must figure out who is your one true love."

"Yes, but I love..." His father vanished before he could finish his sentence and he was back to his realm again.

Smoke rose from the burning sage. He waved some of the smoke towards himself and inhaled deeply, seeking it's healing properties. Then he thought, he should have chosen another herb which helped to clear the mind and heal the soul. However, he had no sweet grass available at the time he had started and did not think about it. So, the sage surficed and seemed to do it's job.

The spirits and the sage quieted his mind and soul so that he could rest for the night. He decided he would visit Seven in the morning and find out what she had decided, if anything, then.
