Happy Valentine's Day

Rated PG

This story came about from a Valentine's activity in one of my J/C groups. Hope you enjoy it. It is two different POV's with that end with a surprise.

Happy Valentine's Day

I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!

Chakotay:

As I watch her walk onto the Bridge with a smile, I can‘t help but smile. I take in her bold and beautiful posture as she walks towards me to take her seat in the command chair. I know this is going to be a good day.

There are so many things I want to share with her. My life story. The history and traditions of my people. Even my deepest thoughts.

I remember the day when I first taught her my people's tradition of talking to animal guides. She was surprised to hear my animal guide wasn't a bear. Even so, I enjoyed telling her that the bear has great pakada. Obviously, she sees me as strong and brave. Her unspoken thoughts of what she thought of me made me smile.

I think just as highly of her too. She is a very strong woman, even on the days she is down about the long trip back home. On those days, I don’t mind being her strength or even a shoulder to cry on for her. I’m glad she feels she can talk to me.

One day, when the time is right, I would love to ask her to marry me, but we have one hurdle to get over and that is her desire to keep protocol. I don’t know if she will ever get over that and allow our relationship to get past captain and commander or even friendship. I want to be with her so much, but I'm not sure if the feeling is mutual.

Yet, sometimes I think she does have the same feelings for me as I do for her. I can see it in her eyes. Those eyes. They are one of the most beautiful shades of blue I have ever seen. They are like the stars when they twinkle with happiness.

I want to tell her how I feel about her, how much I care about her and love her, even if she doesn’t want to acknowledge my feelings. I would do anything for her, including die for her so that she may live.

I even want to show her my love for her, but I can‘t. I respect her too much to cross the boundaries that she established for us.

Kathryn:

Chakotay. His name flows through my mind like music. When I say his name, it seems to sing.

I don’t think I‘ve ever seen a more handsome man. There is something about his tanned skin and brown eyes that draws me. Add to that his deep baritone voice that has a way of exciting me.

He is my right arm and I don’t know what I would do without him. He is also my rock, especially when I am not happy about a situation, or I’m having a bad day. He has helped me deal with the fact that we are lost in the Delta quadrant many times over, and I wouldn't give that up for anything. I would hate to loose him.

At the same time, I have to stay in control of myself as the captain of this ship. I can’t let my feelings for Chakotay get in the way of my duties.

However, it is that very need to stick to protocol that could cause me to loose him. I care for him too much for that.

I need him.

Who am I kidding? I love him with all of my heart. I just don’t know how to show him.

Or do I? Hell, it’s Valentine’s Day. I can afford to bend protocol just this once.

Kathryn was the first to break the silence. “Chakotay, may I see you in my Ready Room?”

Chakotay was confused. He had no idea why she suddenly wanted to see him.

Kathryn had already started for her Ready Room. Just before she reached the door she turned to face him since he was still seated.

“Chakotay?”

“Yes Captain," he finally replied. He rose from his chair and began to follow her.

Once inside, Kathryn turned to face him. She was unusually close to Chakotay, which surprised him. He was still very confused.

“Chakotay,” she began slowly and cautiously. “There are so many things I want to tell you. Let me begin with this.”

Chakotay was taken off guard when she suddenly threw her arms around him and kissed him. However, once he regained his composure, he returned her kiss just as passionately.

Kathryn held on tightly to him as the room spun. Chakotay delighted in the thrill of finally holding her in his arms. Their hearts raced as they were lost in the intoxication of the caress.

Finally as he lifted his mouth from hers, he stared in stunned silence. “What was that all about?” Chakotay asked breathlessly.

“My way of saying, 'Happy Valentine's Day!' " Kathryn answered with a smile. Then she released him and walked back to the Bridge.

Chakotay smiled and followed her.
