Chapters Seven Through Nine

Chapter Seven
At the end of her shift, Janeway slinked down the darkened corridor, still in her revealing dress. She was trying to seek out Chakotay once more as her mind could focus on only two people, Vladimir and Chakotay. If she could not have Vladimir, she wanted Chakotay.
‘There he is,’ she thought, as she seductively licked her lips and then purred, “Chakotay.”
“Kathryn, how are you feeling?”
“I’m fine. I want to apologize for my behaviour earlier.”
She was still some what pale but otherwise she seemed like her usual self now. “It’s understandable. I still think you should be checked out by the doctor.”
“I assure you, I’m fine, Chakotay,” she insisted. “How about I make it up to you with dinner in my quarters?”
“The mess hall would be fine,” he replied uneasily.
“No, people seem to be on edge lately and I’d like some time away from the crew.”
‘Seems like something my Kathryn would say,’ Chakotay thought. It was against his better judgement, given the situation, but he agreed to have dinner with her.
“I’m starved, let’s go!” She said excitedly.
Chakotay was still not sure what to make of her unusual behaviour. He wanted to trust her, despite the fact she obviously had been infected by someone or something and was behaving strangely, but he found it very hard. Even so, he followed her to her quarters.

“Welcome!” An excited Neelix greeted B’Elanna and Tom at the doors of the mess hall. “Glad to see you two tonight. Our specialty this evening is Klingon Blood Pie.”
“Sounds wonderful!” B’Elanna replied hungrily.
“I believe I’ll have the same,” Tom stated.
“Wonderful! Have a seat and I’ll get you both some. Will there be anything else?”
“Blood wine would be nice,” B’Elanna told Neelix.
“You, sir? Ah!” Neelix suddenly exclaimed as he scurried to catch a bug crawling on the floor as the doctor entered. After he swallowed it, he said, “Where are these bugs coming from? There shouldn’t be any on a ship like this.”
“Just go get our dinner, Neelix,” B’Elanna growled.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Curious; since when did you start eating bugs, Neelix?” The doctor asked.
“Well, I don’t know, but they are very tasty. You should try them sometime.”
The doctor made a face of distaste, “I don’t think so.”
“Can I get you some blood pie too, while I’m at it?”
“No, thank you. I think I’ll return to Sickbay for tonight.”
“You sure? I hear it’s very tasty.”
“Yes, I’m quite sure. In the meantime, I would like to see you in Sickbay when your time allows and I do hope that is soon.”
“Yes, sir. After I finish serving dinner, if that is alright, but I fail to see why. I feel fine.”
“Yes, but you won’t for long on a diet of bugs.” The doctor turned and left the mess hall. ‘I’ve seen enough. I feel like I’m in an old novel! Bug-eating servants, blood thirsty vampires, and poor lighting! What’s next?’

“Kathryn, I don’t think this is an appropriate time,” Chakotay stated as he tried to resist her advances. “Besides, I thought you said you were starving.”
“I am, for you,” she replied in a smoky voice as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Forget protocols, forget parameters, forget everything, and give me tonight. You don’t know how much I want you.”
“I think I have an idea,” he said as he removed her hands from his neck. “Kathryn, trust me when I say it’s not because I don’t want you, but now is not the time. You’ll regret it when you are yourself again.”
“I am myself!” She growled. “Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve had the attentions of a man? Right now, I want your attention. I want to touch you and be a part of you.”
“Kathryn…”
*Sickbay to Commander Chakotay*
‘Saved by the bell,’ Chakotay thought as he hit his comm badge. “Chakotay here.”
*I need to see you in Sickbay.*
“Can’t it wait, Doctor?” Kathryn interrupted with irritation. “I have some… Pressing matters to discuss with Chakotay.”
*I really need to see Commander Chakotay.*
Chakotay studied Kathryn for a moment before he answered. He was not sure how he was going to get out of this situation, but he was thankful for the diversion.
“I’m on my way,” he finally replied.
*I’ll be waiting. Sickbay out.*
“I’m sorry, Kathryn. Dinner will have to wait.”
“I’d rather have you for dinner,” she stated as she continued to entice him by pressing herself against him.
“I know. That’s why dinner will have to wait,” Chakotay removed her from his body and departed her quarters.
Kathryn was alone and frustrated once more. ‘For once I’d love it if he would be with me.’
Chapter Eight
“What have you found?” Chakotay asked as he entered Sickbay.
“We’re apparently in a classic novel.”
“I’m not sure what you mean.”
“Have you seen anything unusual about the captain?”
“Aside from her behaviour?”
“Yes.”
“She also has a bite mark.”
“That’s not good,” the doctor frowned. “We have to keep her away from Vladimir somehow.”
“She already thinks I’m jealous of him,” Chakotay informed the doctor. “I don’t think I’m the one who can keep her from him.”
“However, if he were looking for a mate, he would probably focus his attention on the captain.”
“I don’t understand,” Chakotay stated.
“She is beautiful, intelligent, and a leader. Beyond those, I’m not sure what his reason would be for choosing the captain.”
“What do you suggest?” Chakotay inquired.
“Well, according to folklore, if she is bitten three times, she will spend all eternity with him. The only way to stop this process so the captain and the crew can return to normal is to put a stake through the vampire’s heart, burning him with fire or…”
Chakotay interrupted him as Tuvok entered Sickbay. “Doctor, are you telling me we have to follow a story book to cure everyone on the ship?”
"That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“To do nothing would be illogical and we may never get home again,” Tuvok informed them.
“What have you seen?” The doctor asked Tuvok.
“Women, as well as a few men, have made advances on me. The lighting is so dim that it is difficult to see, but the crew is eating blood.”
“What?” Chakotay was shocked.
“I believe he means the Klingon Blood Pie and Blood wine,” the doctor informed Chakotay.
“Well, I guess someone needs to pay a visit to Vladimir and see if he knows anything about this strange phenomenon,” Chakotay suggested.
“I do not believe that would be a prudent course of action,” Tuvok insisted.
“I agree,” stated the doctor. “He may insist he knows nothing about this virus or worse yet, you could end up like Ensign Craig. Besides, I think he will come here… Eventually.”
Tuvok and Chakotay stared at the doctor.
“After all, we have the captain.”

“Katerina.”
Janeway stirred in her sleep.
“Katerina,” Vladimir chanted softly as he crawled into the bed beside her.
Janeway finally opened her eyes, “Vladimir?”
“Katerina.”
She felt no fear and did not question his presence for he had her spellbound once again. Unbidden arousal consumed her anew.
“How would you like to start a new era with me?”
“I’m not sure what you mean,” she shivered as his tongue teased her ear.
“Come, my love, and I’ll show you,” he said as he pulled her close.
His warm breath on her neck felt very erotic. Her desire grew, but she gave no thought to what was happening as he sensuously bit into her neck again.
A soft moan escaped her throat as she felt pleasure and pain all at the same time. She could feel her arousal increasing as he sucked on her neck. There was something exciting about his ministrations.
“Katerina,” he whispered as he teased her with his tongue. “Come join me.”
She made no resistance as he removed her gown and continued to tease her body into a sexual frenzy as he suckled one of her breasts. He reached down and caressed her womanhood.
She let out another moan of pure pleasure.
Vladimir opened his shirt and ran one of his nails across his flesh. “Come, Katerina. Join me.”

‘We have the captain.’ The words echoed in Chakotay’s mind as a vision of a pale, little lizard in mortal danger flashed before him. His spirit guide was trying to protect it from a vicious wolf, as they appeared to be fighting to the death. It was wolf against wolf in a bloody battle for the captain.
“Commander?” The doctor tried to get Chakotay’s attention. “Are you alright?”
“I have to get back to the captain’s quarters!” Chakotay suddenly insisted as feelings of panic overcame him. Then he hurried to the door.
“Commander, where are you going?” Tuvok asked.
“Back to Kathryn’s quarters. I have a bad feeling.”
“We’ll come with you,” the doctor stated as he and Tuvok followed Chakotay.

The door to Kathryn’s quarters was locked and there was no answer when they rang the chime, so Chakotay punched his emergency override code into the panel. Once the doors opened, the three of them rushed into her quarters and were shocked to the core by what they saw.
At first, Chakotay thought Kathryn was making love to another man, but then he saw the red fluid streaming from her neck. Her eyes were not focused on anything as she licked the blood off Vladimir’s muscular chest. It was then he realized she was in a trance and not voluntarily participating, or at least he hoped that was the case.
“Kathryn?”
Vladimir’s physical form suddenly changed into a wolf and he charged at Chakotay, knocking him off his feet. Then he changed back to his original form as he quickly scooped Kathryn into his arms and disappeared with her.
The action was so fast that Tuvok could not fire his phaser at Vladimir without hitting one of the commanding officers.
“Commander, are you alright?” The doctor asked as he quickly scanned him.
“Yes, I’m fine. The more pressing question is where did he take the captain?”
“The logical conclusion would be to his planet,” Tuvok offered.
“We have to get down there!” Chakotay insisted.
“Commander!” The doctor stopped him. “I think you should be aware, it might not be so easy with the crew behaving as they are. They may be under the same mind control as the captain.”
“Noted, but I’m not going to let that stop me.”
“Nor will I,” Tuvok stated. “We have to make every attempt to get her back.”
“Agreed,” Chakotay stated, as the three of them hurriedly left Janeway’s quarters.
“We’ll have to get there before he bites her again, because if he does…”
“Understood, doctor,” Chakotay interrupted him as he rushed through the corridor to beam down to the planet.
“We’ll need supplies,” the doctor informed them. “Our phasers will probably be useless on Vladimir and his people.”
“What do you propose?” Tuvok inquired.
“Oh, I don’t know,” the doctor replied. “Wooden stakes, some fire, crucifixes…”
“I’ve had enough of story book references, Doctor,” Chakotay informed him angrily. “I want her back now!”
“Commander,” Tuvok said calmly. “Emotion will not get her back. We have to try every means at our disposal, no matter how archaic it may seem. It would be best to take all types of weapons with us.”
Chakotay sighed, “Alright, let’s replicate whatever the doctor suggests and get down there! We don’t have much time.”
Chapter Nine
“Katerina, together we will form a new era,” Vladimir informed her as he carried the enchanted Janeway to his lair.
Her mind was too muddled to reply or even be aware of her surroundings. She had no awareness of Vladimir’s control over her or her crew and therefore she felt nothing. There was no desire to fight her way back to her ship or to escape.

The three men hurried down to the transporter room with their replicated weapons and phasers. As they rushed through the corridor, Seven jumped out from around a corner blocking their path.
“Commander,” she said in a sultry voice as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “We still have some unfinished business.”
“Seven, we really have to get going,” Chakotay informed her as he removed her arms.
“You will not leave this ship,” Seven growled. “You will stay here.”
“We don’t have time for this,” the doctor groaned.
“She’s right,” Ensign Craig suddenly appeared. Her pallor was deathly white and sharp teeth protruded out of her mouth. “You aren’t going anywhere!”
B’Elanna and Tom were right behind her. They also had pallid complexions and fangs.
“What do you suggest we do now, Doctor?” Chakotay asked as the three of them backed away, their phasers pointed at their four adversaries.
“Well we certainly don’t want to kill them, if we can cure them,” the doctor insisted.
“May I remind you, Ensign Craig is, in essence, the walking dead,” Tuvok informed them as he pointed his phaser directly at Ensign Craig.
“Well, it may not stun them,” Chakotay began to suggest without taking his eyes off their infected crew members. “But on the count of three…”
The doctor and Chakotay fired at B’Elanna and Tom, causing them to recoil and retreat, while Tuvok dealt with Ensign Craig. Seven charged at Chakotay, knocking him off his feet, but the doctor hit her with his phaser, causing her to scream out in pain as she fled away.
Craig was not reacting to the stun setting. Although Tuvok was reluctant to set the phaser to a higher level, he soon discovered he had no choice. As fast as he did, Craig jumped through the air as she lunged for him, knocking him to the deck.
Tuvok struggled to get free of her, making sure he avoided her ravenous teeth. Craig growled furiously as the two of them wrestled in a life and death struggle.
Finally, the doctor managed to get close enough to her to place the replicated crucifix on her forehead. She shrieked as the cross seared threw her skin, branding her. Then she recoiled away from Tuvok and disappeared.
Tuvok quickly got to his feet, as did Chakotay.
“Good work, Doctor,” Chakotay complimented.
“Well, I'd like to think I can do more than just heal.”
“Commander, we must hurry,” Tuvok reminded them. “However, I suggest we proceed with caution.”
Chakotay nodded as the three of them continued on their journey, phasers at the ready. Shadows and various sounds taunted them as they warily walked down the corridor, causing them to jump from time to time.
Just as they arrived at the doors of the transporter room, another group of demonic, possessed individuals, some of whom were not crew members, appeared out of nowhere.
“It would appear Vladimir knows we are attempting to rescue the captain,” Tuvok noted as he fired at one of them. “They are not all part of the crew.”
Chakotay did not reply. As he also fired at one of the vampire-like people, causing her to scream in pain, all he could think about was rescuing Kathryn.
“You will not leave this ship!” One of them roared as they attempted to attack the doctor.
“There’s too many of them!” Chakotay shouted as he tried to fight off another.
Tuvok knew it was a dangerous long shot, but he fired his phaser at one of the conduits opposite them, hoping it would cause an overload and explode. If it worked, then this group of villains would be gone.
The bulkhead sparked with flames as fast as Tuvok’s phaser fire hit it. The fire caused the possessed group to disappear quickly fortunately, before the force fields surrounded the fire to smother it.
"Let’s get down there, before anymore of them come for us,” Chakotay ordered.
The three entered the transporter room and beamed off the ship to the planet below.

“Well, that was an experience!” The doctor exclaimed as they materialized on the dark eerie planet.
“At least we got past them,” Chakotay replied. “Now we just need to find the captain.”
“Commander, may I remind you that your feelings for the captain could hinder our getting her back,” Tuvok said.
“I’m well aware of that,” Chakotay informed him angrily. Then suddenly he asked, “How do you know how I feel about her?”
“The crew is not blind, Commander,” the doctor told him sharply. “Even I know you and the captain are attracted to each other.”
“Let’s just find her and get her back safely. Then we can discuss what the crew sees between the two of us.”
“That would be a wise decision,” Tuvok noted.
Suddenly Seven, B’Elanna, along with several others, jumped in front of them, blocking their path. They were hissing like wild animals with fangs protruding from their mouths.
“How do you propose we get past them now, Doctor?” Chakotay asked sarcastically.
“This may sound like another one of my silly ideas, but we did bring crosses and fire, didn’t we?”
“While it may seem illogical,” Tuvok said flatly, “it would be better than trying to kill them all.”
“My people were always fond of stories, some even came from life experiences,” Chakotay sighed as he shook his head. “At this point, I’m willing to try anything, no matter how crazy it may sound, just as long as it gets the captain back alive.”
Foolish as it seemed, Chakotay and Tuvok agreed to the doctor’s idea, pulled out the crucifixes, and each set a piece of wood on fire. The infected crew members immediately backed away when the three of them directed the crucifixes at them.
“Well, that was easier than getting off Voyager,” Chakotay commented.
“Commander,” the doctor urgently said. “I think I see them up ahead.”
“Let’s go!” Chakotay ordered.
“I suggest approaching with caution,” Tuvok stated.
“Just what I told the captain concerning Vladimir, but she didn’t listen,” Chakotay informed him.
“If we can get to him and carry out the plan,” the doctor began, “then the crew should be cured of whatever this virus is.”
“It seems too simple a cure,” Chakotay mumbled. “But right now, I’d kill to get her back.”
“He may be counting on that, Commander.”
